Qualities
Plank qualities
Here I would like to explain the qualities using examples.
The terms are now commonly used: Select, Natural, Country and Rustic.
However, this is not a standard, but has become established.
We have our own qualities ready for you; we currently supply some types of wood in Select, Natur and Country. Select clearly describes the best available quality and the greatest length. We do not offer rustic grading because we believe that this will only dissatisfy the customer in the long run. This helps neither the buyer nor the seller in the long run.
So from good to worse:
- Select or Elegance: best available quality (calm grading)
- Natural: low sapwood content, several but small knots
- Select/natural: a mixture of the top two
- Country or Markant: more sapwood content, also larger knots (lively grading)
- Rustic: a lot of sapwood, partially cracked or missing knots (we do not stock these or only rarely or as remnants)
We only supply the best quality for our Redpine, Maple, Cherry and Pine wood species, although this can vary from species to species. A red pine plank is basically knot-free and uniform, pitch pine has only a few knots but a high dispersion of the view (core, sapwood and resin), pine always has many knots (which is how we know pine). Douglas fir is available as lock planks, e.g. with knots and with few knots (knot-free). We increase the quality by producing falling lengths with end bunging; if you choose continuous long lengths (4.30 - 4.90 m), you cannot expect flawless wood! Every type of wood has its own character and this should be preserved, after all, a solid wood plank is a natural product in its purest form and not an artificial product like parquet or laminate.
This is what the differences look like, for example:

This is our oak in Select. The source wood is European oak. | This is our oak in Country. From the same source (same trunk) we then sort this quality, which has only a few large knots. There are several small knots and some up to 2 cm in diameter. Smoothed and sanded! |

This is our walnut in Select. | This is our walnut in Country. For walnut, still few knots, partially cracked and little sapwood. This is also American black walnut. |

Pitchpine in select: Only occasional knots up to 10mm, occasional resin pockets, with longer lengths also larger color deviations, more knots and dry cracks. | Pitchpine country with knots, even larger ones. |

Maple in Select quality, pure white | Country maple, also dark heartwood |
Please note that wood is a natural product and there may always be slight variations.
